What a symptom-scale change means
A number gains meaning when we know how it was obtained and which comparison it represents.
Arithmetic and importance to the person are different questions.
A number gains meaning when we know how it was obtained and which comparison it represents.
An invented practice example
Imagine two groups on a 0–10 scale. The mean falls by 2 points in A and 1 point in B: the difference in changes is 1 point. These are hypothetical numbers, not ziconotide data or a response threshold. They do not tell us how many people improved or whether the change mattered to them.
Ask about meaning
FDA investigates how patient perspectives can inform interpretation of symptom changes. Look for evidence of meaningful change for that population alongside statistical differences. Retain the scale, recall period and assessment time. A scale from another condition does not automatically provide the same threshold.
Professional context / Contexto profesional
Distinguish individual change, mean differences and responder proportions.
Evidence / Evidencia
Original arithmetic exercise and methodological question.
Limitations / Limitaciones
Does not establish a universal minimum change or diagnostic criterion.
